Michael Hall, PhD

Department of Management University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

Born in the United Kingdom but Australian by passport, Michael is Professor in Marketing, joining the department at the end of 2006. Prior to this Michael has had positions including Professor in Tourism at the University of Otago, Professor of Tourism and Service Management at Victoria University of Wellington, and Honorary Professor in the Department of Marketing, Stirling University, Scotland. Michael has longstanding teaching, publication and research interests in tourism, regional development and social/green marketing with particular emphasis on issues of place branding and marketing as well as conservation and environmental change, event management and marketing, and the use of tourism as an economic development and conservation mechanism. More recently he has been undertaking research on wine and food marketing and gastronomy, which has required strenuous research in the field. He is the author and editor of over 40 books as well as over 250 journal articles and book chapters and has been active in a number of international research and business associations. He is the editor of the journal Current Issues in Tourism.

Raed Saadeh,
Managing Director, Jerusalem Hotel

Mr. Saadeh is the Owner and General Manager of the Jerusalem Hotel; a boutique hotel for which he introduced the concept and did the design. Mr. Saadeh is an ex-President of the Arab (Palestinian) Hotel Association. He is founder and board member of the Palestinian Art Court, board Member of the Mamal foundation for contemporary art, chairman of Sunbula Organization for Fair Trade, founder and chairman of the Rozana Association for Rural Tourism development, founder and former President of Yabous Productions for Performing Arts and founder and chairman of the Jerusalem Tourism Cluster intended to maximize the economic returns and benefits of the local community.

Professor John Tribe is head of tourism at the University of Surrey, UK. His undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies were all undertaken at the University of London. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and Academician of the Academy of the Social Sciences. His research concentrates on sustainability, epistemology and education and he has authored books on strategy, philosophy, economics, education and environmental management in tourism.

Funded research projects have included sustainable tourism and forests in the European Union, curriculum development in Moldova, quality in tourism education and the use of visual images in tourism. He is past Chair of the UK Association for Tourism in Higher Education was the specialist advisor for tourism for the UK 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. He is co-chair of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Education and Science Council and editor of Annals of Tourism Research and The Journal of Hospitality, Leisure Sport and Tourism Education (JOHLSTE).


Musaffer Uysal, PhD

Muzaffer (Muzzo) Uysal, Professor of Tourism has extensive experience in the travel and tourism field, authoring or co-authoring a significant number of articles in tourism, hospitality and recreation journals, proceedings, book chapters, and four monographs and two books relating to different aspects of tourism and research. Dr. Uysal is a member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism, the Academy of Leisure Sciences, and serves as co-editor of Tourism Analysis: An Interdisciplinary Journal. In addition, he sits on the editorial boards of a significant number of journals, including Journal of Travel Research, and Annals of Tourism Research as resource editor.  Dr. Uysal received many awards including the Award for Research Excellence, Alumni Award for Excellence in International Education, Teaching Excellence Award from Pamplin College of Business, and Outstanding Research Award from College of Human Resources.

Dr Senija Causevic is a senior lecturer in International Tourism Management. She holds a PhD degree in Tourism and Hospitality from the University of Strathclyde Business School. Senija’s main research focus is tourism development in post-conflict societies and Balkan countries, the role of tourism in the process of normalisation of social relationships, social justice and tourism, cultural heritage, contested heritage and ‘dark tourism’.

Tomas J. Cuevas-Contreras holds a PhD in Management Sciences from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) and post doctorate at Universitat de Girona, Spain. He is a lecturer in Tourism Management and Methodology Tourism Research course at Management Sciences Department, Tourism Studies of the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez. He is a Research Professor and Academic Board Leader of Tourism CA-31 at UACJ. He is member of the Scientific Committee  and Editorial Board of: Journal of Tourism and Peace Research, Teoria y Praxis Journal and Academic Journal Nova Rua  His research interests: cross borders tourism, cultural heritage, tourism development and management urban/rural tourism.


Sjoerd Gehrels,
Stenden University
 

Sjoerd A. Gehrels (1959) started in Dutch higher education after ten years working in the hospitality industry in 1989. Sjoerd A. Genrels is a course leader for the MA in International Service Management, Consultant International Affairs, Senior Lecturer and licensed Covey Trainer. In Stenden University of Applied Sciences (formerly CHN), Leeuwarden, The Netherlands he worked as senior lecturer, deputy director for the BBA in International Hospitality Management and programme director for the MA in IHM. Currently, he serves as course leader for the MA in International Service Management, consultant International Affairs, senior lecturer and licensed Covey trainer. Sjoerd achieved his MSc from the University of Surrey, Guildford in 1999 and a MBA from Oxford Brookes University, Oxford in 2004. Sjoerd is currently progressing towards his Doctorate at the University of Stirling. His research expands into the role good entrepreneurship can have for promoting peace and balance in societies.


Dr. Alon Gelbman

Dr. Alon Gelbman (PhD, MA, and BA) is a  senior lecturer in the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Studies at Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee, Israel (Mobile Post Emek Mayarden, 15132, Israel.  He is a human geographer and his main research focuses on borders and tourism, urban/rural tourism and wellness tourism.  


Dr. Rami K. Isaac

Rami K. Isaac holds a PhD in Spatial Sciences from University of Groningen, The Netherlands. He is a lecturer in Tourism Planning & Development and a co-ordinator of the MA Master in European Tourism Management course at the NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences. He was the external assessor of Bethlehem TEMPUS (2004-2006) curriculum development project in Palestine in the field of pilgrimage, tourism and cultural industries and he is a research fellow of the Centre for Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCCU) at the NHTV. His research interests include tourism development and management, cultural heritage, political aspects of tourism, conflict and tourism.

Dr. Noga Collins-Kreiner,
Department of Geography and Environmental Studies University of Haifa, Israel.

Noga Collins-Kreiner is a Senior lecturer (PhD), in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Haifa, Israel (http://geo.haifa.ac.il/~nogack/). She is also a member of the Center for Tourism, Pilgrimage & Recreation Research at the University of Haifa, Israel (http://ctprr.haifa.ac.il). Her main research interests are: Tourism Development, Tourism Management, Religious Tourism, Pilgrimage, Social and Cultural Geography and Ecotourism. Nigel Morgan PhD is Professor of Tourism Studies at Cardiff School of Management’s Welsh Centre for Tourism Research at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.

Professor Nigel Morgan is a strong proponent of advocacy scholarship, he was one of originators of the notion of hopeful tourism scholarship and is co-chair of the biennial Critical Tourism Studies Conference Series. Nigel has a background in leisure policy and public sector tourism and public relations management and has held a number of senior academic posts at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff since 1994. He is passionately interested in the connections between tourism, social justice, identity and place and has written or edited 15 books in these areas. Nigel is an editorial board member of several leading international journals including Place Branding & Public Diplomacy, Hospitality & Society and Vacation Marketing and is an Associate Editor of the Annals of Tourism Research.


Dr. Alex Nkabahona,
Makerere University, Faculty of Arts, MA Peace and Conflict Studies Program, Kampala, Uganda.

Alex Nkabahona (PhD). He holds a PhD in Religious Studies and Philosophy from Leuven Catholic University, Belgium. He is a senior lecturer and research consultant at Makerere University, Faculty of Arts, Department of Peace and Conflict Studies where he has taught since 1997. He is also co-founder member of African Institute for Strategic Research, Governance and Development where he holds the portfolio of Executive Director but also doubles as Director of Research and consultant in Defense and Security studies at the Institute. He is member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Tourism and Peace Research by International Center for Peace through Tourism Research (ICPTR), Den Hague.


Dr. Marina Novelli,

Dr Marina Novelli (PhD, BSc, PgDipEd, PgDipPlanning) has a background in economics and human geography and research interests in development and management studies applied to tourism. Her most recent research and consultancy assignments are in the field of international tourism planning, tourism and regional development, rural diversification, sustainable business development and management, tourism product development, community based and pro-poor tourism approaches, niche tourism trends and tourism and hospitality capacity building in the developing world.

She has conducted a variety of projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Asia, with her most  recent research and consultancy engagements including work for the World Bank, UNIDO, UNESCO, the EU, National Ministries, Regional Development Agencies and NGOs. She is known amongst academics and practitioners for her research on tourism and international development and amongst others for her volume Niche tourism: contemporary issues, trends and cases (Oxford: Elsevier 2005).

She is currently involved in research on tourism and poverty alleviation, tourism in post-conflict destinations, travellers’ philanthropy and strategic giving, capacity building and sustainable development in various sub-Sahara Africa locations. She sees her mission as generating new knowledge on ways in which tourism can play a key role in stimulating local economies, conserving the environment, developing peoples and changing lives.


Albert Postma
Stenden University, the Netherlands

Albert Postma, a social geographer has a teaching and research experience of over 20 years. Besides his new position as a professor with a research focus on scenario planning in tourism, he is completing his Ph.D. in a comparative study about residents’ attitudes toward tourism on two Dutch and two Caribbean islands. At Stenden University, Albert served for over 10 years as course leader of the MA programme International Leisure and Tourism Studies. He is senior lecturer at the School of Graduate Studies and the International School of Leisure Management, and member of the research group Service Studies. He is currently head of the research group on scenario planning at Stenden University, and teaches research methods at the university’s graduate courses. Previously, he worked as a researcher and consultant at the Institute Service Management in the Netherlands. One of his achievements is the establishment of Toerdata Noord in 1996, the monitoring system for tourism supply and demand in the Northern part of the Netherlands. Most recently, he is serving as head of the newly established European Tourism Institute at Stenden University.


Hans Revier,
Stenden University, the Netherlands

Drs. Hans Revier  (1954) studied biology (University of Amsterdam) and specialised in marine and freshwater ecology.  In 1985 he joined the Dutch Society for the Preservation of the Wadden Sea (Wadden Society).  At first he worked as campaigner and policy officer, later on as director and director of external affairs.  He was also a member of the Dutch governmental Wadden Sea Advisory Board and a member of the international Wadden Sea Forum. For almost a decade he was president of a federation of environmental organisations in countries bordering the North Sea.  In 2007 Revier was inaugurated as Professor of Marine Wetlands Studies at Stenden University and the Hanze University in Groningen. His main field of research is the sustainable development of the international Wadden Sea area, focussing on tourism developments at Stenden and rural development at the Hanze University. Besides his research he is still affiliated with the Wadden Sea Society as chief editor of the WADDENmagazine.



Pranil Upadhayaya,
Katmandu University, Nepal

Mr. Pranil Upadhayaya is a PhD researcher in the field of 'Tourism, Conflict and Peace’ at Human and Natural Resources Studies Centre, Kathmandu University (http://www.hnrsc.edu.np/) being conducted in collaboration with the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North - South. He is being involved in giving empirical basis to a segment of this research result in the real situation through ‘Partnership Actions for Mitigating Syndromes (PAMS)’,a small scale local development project. PAMS, which has contributed for the development of an alternative model tourism trekking route with conflict sensitive tourism code of conducts in Western Nepal Mountain under the notion of ‘peace through tourism’, is a basis for evaluating the potential of transdisciplinary research in triggering social learning process.

Mr. Upadhayaya's academic and professional involvements in past consist of teaching travel and tourism studies, and formulating, managing and operating tourists’ package tours. His major research interests include tourism and peace, sustainable tourism, eco tourism and alternative tourism.
